“KNIGHTS TURN THE TIDE FOR A STATEN ISLAND FAMILY EFFECTED BY SANDY”

The Knights of York donated $2,500 to Pedro Correa and his family in Staten Island on December 3, 2012 after reading a poignant article in a local newspaper about a man who bravery saved several lives in Hurricane Sandy, although he lost his home and nearly all of his possessions in the storm.

Pedro, who survived 9/11, served in Bagdad, and safeguards a maximum security prison, unexpectedly said he feared for his life on October 29th, the night Sandy devastated Staten Island’s shoreline.

The Correa’s home that had been recently remodeled was completely destroyed by another home that was knocked off its foundation and crashed into it due to Sandy’s heavy winds and flooding waters. “Their entire neighborhood was devastated, and no one is even sure if they will ever be able to rebuild,” said Knight Keith Mikulewich. Pedro, who had gotten his family to safe ground before Sandy, returned to his home to secure and protect it, but as the storm worsened he realized he would not survive if he stayed, so he evacuated to seek safety. He dove into the freezing cold water and swam to higher ground, breaking a rib in the process. His ordeal did not end there, as there were others to be saved, so he jumped back into the rising tide to help ESU workers rescue a 96 year old woman, her 76 year old son, and a nurse’s aide, who were trapped inside a gas filled and rapidly submerging house to carry them to safety.

Correa estimates the loss of house and possessions were worth about $600,000, but his insurance is capped at $250,000, and FEMA only offered $2,800 in relief. The Knights felt honor-bound to assist the Correa family with a donation of $2,500 to help them. “In just one day they lost it all, and we feel blessed to be able to help such a deserving man and his family,” said Knight Domenic Ferrante.
